Government Decree declaring a monument of national importance

Franciscan Monastery Kostanjevica in Nova Gorica

Today, 5 September 2024, the Government, by a decree adopted, declared the Franciscan Monastery of Kostanjevica in Nova Gorica a monument of national importance. The declaration is a confirmation of the exceptional importance of the sanctuary at Kostanjevica, which, with its treasures from the past, is an oasis of greenery, peace and spirituality.

We are very proud of the declaration of the Franciscan Monastery of Kostanjevica in Nova Gorica as a monument of national importance, as the government's adoption of the decree confirmed our evaluation, which showed the exceptional nature of Kostanjevica in the national and perhaps even wider context. The adopted decree proves that there is a truly important monument in Nova Gorica, of which Slovenians can be justly proud. A great deal of effort was put into the process of preparing the proposal for the proclamation by the ZVKDS OE Nova Gorica, as well as by the Goriška Museum, which, in cooperation with the Institute, prepared the inventory book. The excellent cooperation between the ZVKDS OE Nova Gorica and the monastery, which provided the conservators with all the support they needed for the research, the preparation of the inventory, the various formal procedures and the information of the local community, also contributed greatly.

The Franciscan monastery, which regularly opens its doors to visitors from all over Slovenia as well as from abroad, and offers many events and experiences especially to the local community, has been undergoing renovation in recent years. Since 2017, the monastery's church has been almost continuously under construction, with precious stucco and paintings being restored in stages each year..

The adoption of the decree declaring the church a monument of national importance will, among other things, make it easier for the Franciscans at Kostanjevica to seek co-financing for the restoration through public tenders or to successfully complete the restoration of the monastery church.

The designation as a monument of national importance is a confirmation of the exceptional cultural-spiritual value of the sanctuary at Kostanjevica.

On the site of the Franciscan Monastery of Kostanjevica in Nova Gorica, there are four immovable cultural heritage units registered in the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage: the Franciscan Monastery, the Church of the Annunciation of the Lord to the Virgin Mary at Kostanjevica, the Bourbons' Tomb and the Škrabč Library. All of the above-mentioned sites have been declared monuments of local importance by the Decree on the Proclamation of Cultural and Historical Monuments and Natural Sites in the Territory of the Municipality of Nova Gorica (Official Gazette (Gorica), No 8/85-275).
