The rich and culturally diverse archaeological heritage of the Danube region is the only remnant of millennia of Iron Age development of our society and a carrier of important information about our past. The outstanding potential of the heritage for the development of tourism in the region is limited by the poor traceability of the remains, which makes sustainable management and use difficult. By tangibility is meant not only the physical presence of archaeological artefacts or site reconstructions, but also the accessibility of archaeology to the general public. New technologies allow us not only to visualise archaeological knowledge in entirely new ways, but also to communicate it quickly and attractively to a wider public.
Archaeological e-scapes of the Danube Region
The main objective of the Danube's Archaeological eLandscapes project is to make the Danube region's archaeological heritage more visible regionally, nationally and internationally, and thus more attractive for integration into sustainable cultural tourism. The backbone of the partnership is formed by the main museums of the region, focusing on the most highlighted archaeological landscapes of the Danube region. By integrating state-of-the-art technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), mainstream museums will encourage visitors to experience heritage in its original landscapes. Not only in their own countries, but also in the countries of other project partners.
The aim is not only to support one of the largest networks of major institutions with archaeological collections and expertise, but also to focus on a long-term cross-promotional campaign for the region's archaeological cultural heritage. By promoting the new cultural route "Iron Age Danube route", the project will continue the work of the Iron Age Danube project, a finalist of the RegioStars 2018 selection, while creating new international archaeological routes as one of the tools for heritage conservation.
