We meet in the gardens is an event to highlight the richness and diversity of historic and contemporary parks and gardens across Europe. The initiative comes from France, where for more than twenty years the Rendez-vous aux jardins (We meet in the gardens) during the first weekend in June. In 2018, the initiative was extended to other European gardens and parks.
Last year, 21 countries and almost 3,000 gardens took part. The largest number of gardens opened their doors in France, but more than 600 gardens in other European countries also took part, including 20 gardens and parks from Slovenia, which together organised more than 30 events on the theme of music in the garden. The initiative aims to recognise the diversity and richness of gardens and parks, their cultural significance and their positive impact on the well-being of garden and park visitors. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness of the many measures taken by the Ministry of Culture, the Volčji Potok Arboretum, the Slovenian Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, local communities, managers and owners to preserve, restore and design gardens, and to transfer specialised knowledge and skills.
This year, at the invitation of the Volčji Potok Arboretum, which coordinates the initiative in Slovenia in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, 30 gardens and parks in Slovenia responded. The participating gardens include botanical gardens, private gardens, historic gardens, parks, an arboretum, a farm garden, an urban forest, an open-air museum, a teaching garden, a karst garden and a nursery. On the theme of 2024: five senses in the garden or 31 May to 2 June more than 50 events with a varied programme: guided tours, workshops, concerts, exhibition openings, experiences, walks, tastings, presentations.
